Our days are busy and our nights aren’t long enough. As we race the clock everyday to get it all done, we reason that there aren’t enough hours in the day. The problem is not our daily time limit. It is how we choose to allocate the time we do have. We need to create time for planning and reflection. A great way to do this is through journaling. Now, some of you may not be a fan of writing things out. But, it’s worth noting that many of the wealthy leaders that inspire us today, channel many of their wealth getting visions from the mind to the hand and through the point of a pen.
If you are trying to break out of a broken financial pattern, perhaps it’s time to stretch a little and do the work necessary to bring the change you want into your financial life. In this article, I’d like to share with you a journaling exercise to help you kick start your journey into financial freedom.
For each of the following 5 steps, use your journal to answer the questions and to record any thoughts that come up for you:
1. Examine your current money relationship. Change starts with awareness. It’s important to know how you behave with money. If money were a person that you were involved with, how have you been treating that person?
2. Identify thoughts and beliefs about money. Your behavior with money correlates with the way you THINK about it. What comes to mind when you think about money? If you think “I’m broke”, you’ll behave in a way that will continually make that your reality.
3. Analyze Your Money History. Look at how money was treated during your childhood. What patterns do you see showing up in your adulthood? You can begin to change them once you are aware of them.
4. Eliminate negative money beliefs and replace them with positive ones. Instead of saying “it’s too hard to save money”, say “saving money is easy as I save a little consistently”. The more you say something, the more you will start to believe it. Flip the script on thoughts and beliefs you identified in step 2.
5. Honor your values in your finances. True fulfillment comes when you center not only your finances around your values, but every area of your life. Be sure you know your top five values and that you plan your finances around them.
Once you have worked through these steps. Take some time to reflect on your answers and come up with some actions you can take to begin to reverse negative patterns that keep you from realizing your financial freedom. If you haven’t already done so, go to www.masteryourmoneymindset.com for a free downloadable audio and worksheet. This will only be available for a very short while longer. A while ago, Oprah, did a show on millionaire moms. This show featured several ladies who had come up with products and services that had made them millionaires. While all were exceptional, one in particular stood out. She was a single mother who did not have much education or money, and she wanted desperately to provide for her children. She told Oprah that one day she saw a truck filled with scrap metal at a gas station. As she watched the man driving it, an idea formed in her mind and she decided that she, too, could make a living in scrap metal. She began her odyssey and today her company is worth $140 million dollars! This lady possesses one of the main keys to the millionaire mindset: she believed that she could be a success!
Eradicate yourself of beliefs that do not serve you.
One way to do this is to visualize positive outcomes for you and your business. Develop a very clear picture of what you would like your life to be like once you are a success. Many people have very good results making dream boards for this purpose. A dream board is simply a poster that contains pictures and words that are descriptive of how you would like your life to be. The sky is the limit here! Sometimes when I do this exercise with people, they dream really small. Remember, it costs nothing extra to dream big! Whatever you desire, no matter how outrageous and unlikely it may seem, should be represented on your dream board.
Find your passion.
The most successful people are able to find ways to make a living by doing things they love. A burning passion will also help you keep going when times are tough, as they inevitably will be at times. What is it that you truly love? What would you willingly do for free?
Find a niche within your area of passion.
Most successful people do one or two things very well and that is what they stick to in their businesses! It is very difficult to be all things to all people, so look at what you are really good at and then figure out how you can offer that to the world. If you can’t figure this out on your own, do not be afraid to ask others who know you well for help. Ask them “if you could hire me to do anything for you, what would it be?” You may be very surprised by what others come up with.
Take action every day towards your goals.
Chanting positive affirmations is a good thing, as previously mentioned, but self-talk alone is not enough to be a success. Instead, you must make a plan and execute on a very consistent basis! Many people think that massive amounts of time are required to work towards their goals. Nothing could be further from the truth. As long as you spend some time each day in pursuit of your goal, you will get there. It’s like what they say about eating an elephant… you do it one bite at a time. If you are a super busy person, perhaps working another job while you build your business, start with devoting 15 minutes a day. There may be days where you can do more than 15 minutes, if so, than do so. Before you know it, what you thought was a massive feat is now complete. Remember the key is consistency, a little daily adds up to a lot over time.
So there you have it! These are the four main steps that you can take to master your money mindset from the inside out. By committing to following these steps, you will exponentially increase the odds of becoming a master of your wealth.
